Computer systems engineer for the Atmospheric Electricity group at DTU Space

Do you want to work in a research group studying the most energetic natural phenomena on Earth? The Atmospheric Electricity research group at DTU Space needs a computer scientist to maintain and upgrade their software, servers and camera equipment. The successful candidate will help us to illuminate the complex physics of lightning and related phenomena.
The Atmospheric Electricity research group at DTU Space is housed at DTU Space in Lyngby, where we have all the servers and infrastructure needed to process data from our various instruments and experiments, including ASIM onboard the International Space Station (ISS) and ground-based lightning observation campaigns. The group needs a computer scientist to manage their servers, data reduction software and pipeline, databases and website.

Maintenance of this infrastructure is essential to process and disseminate our original data to the international scientific community studying lightning and related phenomena. The position will be funded by two projects: The ASIM Science Data Centre (ASDC) and the Neuro-Lightning project, which will use neuromorphic cameras to study mountaintop lightning.

The job
The work includes the following duties:

  • Maintenance and upgrade of the data-processing software.
  • Development of new software.
  • Maintenance and upgrades of the website.
  • Installation, setup and maintenance of linux servers.
  • Monitoring of pipeline activity.
  • Troubleshooting problems reported by scientific users.
  • Archiving of ASIM data at ESAC in Madrid.
  • Develop the software and camera system related to the Neuro-Lightning project.
  • Support the camera system calibration and laboratory testing.
  • Setting up the camera system for field campaigns.
  • Data analysis related to ASIM and the Neuro-Lightning project.

Our expectations of you
You must have a master’s degree in lightning physics, lightning protection, information technology, or computer science, and be proficient in the following:

  • Python
  • Django and CSS
  • GIT repositories
  • Linux and Docker
  • System administration, including RAID
  • sftp protocols and ssh
  • JavaScript
  • Postgres(SQL)
  • Knowledge of lightning physics

It would also be advantageous for you to have knowledge of the following:

  • Jenkins
  • SVN repositories
  • UHB and yamcs
  • ESA standards for software and documentation (ECSS)
  • Neuromorphic cameras

Salary and appointment terms
Your salary will be determined in accordance with the collective agreement between DTU and the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. It will be based on your qualifications and experience, and will be negotiated via your union.

The place of work will be at DTU Space in Lyngby with the possibility to work remotely 1 day a week.

The period of employment is 1 year starting 1st November 2024. This is a full-time position (37 hours per week).
