DTU Tenure Track Assistant Professor in Functional Coherent Optical Imaging Systems for Disease Detection – DTU Health Tech

Opening for a candidate with experience in optical coherent imaging systems, e.g., OCT. You will contribute to advancing such techniques and identifying biomarkers based on light-tissue interactions. A focus will be placed on the development of technology that can be translated into clinical use.

DTU Health Tech invites applications for a position as Assistant Professor in functional coherent optical imaging systems for disease detection. The position will be part of the optical imaging and sensing (OASIS) section.

We are looking for a candidate with experience in optical coherent imaging systems, and in particular, optical coherence tomography (OCT). You must have documented experience working with functional extensions of OCT including OCT angiography and elastography. You will contribute to advancing these techniques and to quantification of biomarkers based on light-tissue interactions in coherent imaging systems. A strong focus will be placed on the development of technology (hardware and software) that can be translated into clinical use.

Responsibilities and qualifications
Your overall focus will be to strengthen the department’s competences in functional optical imaging with the goal of developing technologies that can be translated to clinical use. In particular, your focus will be on coherent imaging systems such as optical coherence tomography which can leverage dynamic speckle contrast for extracting functional information and identifying biomarkers for disease detection. You will be a bridge between DTU Health Tech and clinical researchers at Bispebjerg hospital and other hospitals in Denmark. You will work with nearby colleagues, and with academic, clinical, and industrial partners in Denmark as well as abroad.

As part of this work, you will lead an existing project towards the development of a new non-invasive method for assessing nerve fiber function in patients with peripheral neuropathy. The aim of this work is to use OCT and OCTA with quantitative analysis and image processing tools to identify biomarkers of small-fiber nerve function and disfunction.

Your primary responsibilities will be to:

  • Lead a group of scientists conducting frontier research in the field of functional coherent imaging systems, particularly optical coherence tomography imaging and including (but not exclusively) OCT angiography and elastography with a goal towards developing tools for clinical translation
  • Lead an ongoing research program identifying identify biomarkers of small-fiber nerve function and disfunction using OCT and OCTA.
  • Publish and disseminate research findings and innovation – scientifically and in the public domain
  • Teaching and supervision of BSc and MSc students and co-supervision of PhD students
  • Contribute to attracting external funding from public and private sources
  • Establish and develop collaborations and partnerships with colleagues in academia, the healthcare sector, and industry, and participate in international research collaborations/consortia,
  • Contribute to the development of strategic research and educational initiatives

Your primary qualifications will be:

  • A PhD in biomedical optics or similar
  • Academic expertise from outside DTU
  • Expertise and documented results in optical coherence tomography including technology, image processing, functional measurements, and applications
  • Experience in photonics and instrumentation
  • Documented teaching experience including supervising students from Bachelor to PhD.
  • Experience from interdisciplinary research – and great motivation for collaboration
  • Willingness to work in a shared environment including collaboration with other engineers and clinicians
  • Enthusiasm for collaborating with industry partners
  • Documented academic volunteer work including public outreach, reviewing journal articles, etc.

You must be responsible for the teaching of courses. DTU employs two working languages: Danish and English. You are expected to be fluent in at least one of these languages, and in time are expected to master both.

As formal qualification you must hold a PhD degree (or equivalent).

Salary and terms of employment
The appointment will be based on the collective agreement with the Danish Confederation of Professional Associations. The allowance will be agreed upon with the relevant union. Starting date is 1 January 2025. This position is a full-time position.
