Molten Salt Electrochemist

Seaborg Technologies

Molten Salt Electrochemist

EXPLORE MOLTEN SALTS FOR A GREENER ENERGY FUTURE
Are you enthusiastic about embracing unconventional challenges and thriving in a start-up environment? Would you like to collaborate with a committed team and use your experience with electrochemistry and molten salts to design and conduct innovative experiments to generate state of the art data needed to design a complex nuclear reactor? Then Seaborg may be the place you are looking for!

At Seaborg Technologies we are developing a nuclear power plant concept fundamentally different from what exists today. By bringing to market an advanced molten salt reactor we are making nuclear an inexpensive, sustainable, and scalable technology that can make fossil fuels a thing of the past and revolutionise energy markets. The opportunity to make an impact on climate change and provide millions of people with cheap and accessible energy is what inspires all of us every day.

Creating an innovation that can impact the world isn’t easy and requires a diverse team bringing together a range of talents and perspectives. We know that we cannot do this alone, so we work closely with regulators, shipyards, academic institutions, and the nuclear industry from all over the world to develop and identify needed technologies and materials so we can produce an advanced floating nuclear power plant.

This is your chance to become part of a collaborative research environment where you can chart an uncommonly diverse career and help change the world.

The start-up environment allows for great influence, the possibility to take on responsibility, and personal growth but also demands flexibility.

THE ROLE
We are looking for a Molten Salt Electrochemist to lead and support the execution of experimental projects to understand molten salt behaviour in Seaborg’s reactor. Your research will primarily focus on fluoride salts, using electrochemistry as a tool to understand the behaviour of salt, e.g., redox properties, and of salt impurities, such as fission and corrosion products. Besides conducting experiments in static environments, electrochemical techniques are to be developed for our dynamic small-scale pilot set-ups. Your results will give direct input to Seaborg’s reactor design, such as the redox control methodology and materials selection.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES & TASKS

  • Plan, manage and execute experimental projects to understand properties of molten fluoride salts with electrochemistry, analyse the generated data, and determine parameters that are relevant for a stable molten salt environment.
  • Support and train team members in molten salt electrochemistry.
  • Develop safe and effective experimental methodologies for use in Seaborg’s laboratories.
  • Assist in the development of our in-house molten salt electrochemistry research capabilities.
  • Collaborate with engineers, specialists, and technicians to develop and establish suitable methods, tools, and routines for molten salt chemistry experiments that conform with relevant standards and ensure data validation.
  • Keep informed of global developments in molten salt chemistry, attend workshops and webinars if applicable, and establish and support collaborations with internal and external stakeholders from initial research to early concepts.

PROFESSIONAL COMPETENCIES
To succeed in the role, we imagine you have some of the following competencies:

  • You hold at least a master’s degree in chemistry (or related field).
  • You can identify, analyze, and solve complex problems with electrochemical methods.
  • You have experience with molten salt handling and electrochemistry.
  • You have experience working with radioactive materials, ideally in gloveboxes.
  • You have a strong background in conducting research, ideally with industrial experience.
  • You can manage projects effectively, including planning, scheduling, communication, and resource allocation.

PERSONAL COMPETENCIES

  • You see problems and take initiative in finding solutions. You take responsibility for your tasks and obligations and make sure they are completed.
  • You communicate clearly and with empathy and understanding, which allows you to interact with many different stakeholders within a wide variety of technical disciplines.
  • You understand the need for and adhere to rules and regulations, ensuring that all work is thorough and complies with standards.
  • You are persistent and committed to identifying solutions to problems despite strict regulatory frameworks and organizational guidelines.
  • You are adaptable and resilient in environments with constant change, thriving on finding structure amid chaos.
  • You are a role model for implementing good laboratory practices, ensuring adherence to safety protocols, and maintaining a clean and organized laboratory environment.

WHAT WE OFFER

  • The chance to work on a ground-breaking technology that will impact the global energy landscape.
  • Working closely with globally acknowledged experts in the field.
  • An international and diverse team.
  • Personal and professional development opportunities and support.
  • Informal and flexible work environment.

WANT TO JOIN THE TEAM?
Please submit a motivational letter and CV in English. We evaluate and interview candidates on a running basis. We expect you to be able to start 1st of February or March.

As we strive to have a neutral hiring process, please do not add a picture to your CV. We look forward to reading your application.
