External Lecturer: Precision Medicine: Tailored Treatment in Clinical Practice

DIS - Study Abroad attracts American bachelor-level students from top universities in the U.S. and provides academically challenging courses and intercultural experiences. DIS is currently hiring an external faculty to teach the Core Course Precision Medicine: Tailored Treatment in Clinical Practice to our highly motivated students spending a semester studying in Stockholm.

Course Description
Standard clinical care is shifting its focus towards precision medicine, where the choice for treatment relies on the specific physiological characteristics of a given patient. The rapid development of ‘omics’, including genomics, epigenomics, and proteomics, is currently adding a new dimension to the advancement of precision medicine and clinical care.

This course covers current clinical practices of precision medicine in disease prevention, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis, with a special focus on precision molecular therapeutics in cancer. The course also introduces several major human organ systems in a peer teaching approach. In addition, students study patient cases and address diagnosis and treatment by using the precision medicine approach.

Tasks

• Prepare and facilitate teaching and experiential learning activities
• Evaluate, grade, and provide feedback on students’ work throughout the semester
• Teach Spring semester (mid January - mid May) and Fall semester (mid August - mid December)
  • Teaching takes place Tuesdays and up to 4 Fridays during a semester, 15.00-17.00 (meeting time can be a little later if needed)
• Total course load is 14 lectures (120 minutes each) and 2 Field Studies per semester
• As part of the course, the students have two academic weeks that focus on their course alone:
  • One Core Course Week, where they travel for 3 days in Sweden (Short Study Tour), and have the remaining 2 days in Stockholm with some activities related to the course
  • One Long Study Tour (6 days long, in another European country)
  • Both tours are facilitated by the course faculty and a DIS tour leader

Relevant skills and knowledge
The ideal candidate has experience with some of the course topics and is well-versed in the field both academically and practically. In addition, you have:

• Relevant background (MD, PhD, clinical researcher etc.)
• Experience with teaching is an advantage but not a requirement
• Excellent academic English
• Willingness to engage academically and socially with the students
• Openness to pedagogical support from DIS
• Ability to translate DIS’ interactive, hands on teaching philosophy into practice

There is one other section of this course; therefore, considerable material will be available for whoever teaches this section.

As this is a part-time teaching position, faculty are able to continue other work while teaching.

Start Date
Training, onboarding, and course preparation will begin upon hiring. Teaching begins January 2025.

Teaching at DIS
Teaching at DIS requires creativity and flexibility. Faculty prioritize bringing course material to life through interactive and experiential learning, and are communicative and engaged with their students. In addition, teaching at DIS involves leading student Field Studies in the Stockholm region, student assessment, grading, and feedback.

Students are typically in their third year of university. Courses are all taught in English.

Pedagogical support, training, and mentorship is available at DIS through the Learning Lab and experienced faculty; faculty are encouraged to collaborate with academic support staff in various professional development opportunities.
