Your role and responsibilities
ABB's division Large Motors and Generators (MOLM) in Västerås, Sweden, is proposing a Master thesis in the field of analyzing rotating Synchronous Condensers in various power grids. The overall aim of the thesis is to analyze different load/fault cases in different network grids to understand interaction between network and synchronous condenser, its performance and response. The proposed method is to define and model the chosen types of grids and synchronous condenser in a power grid analyse tool (Power factory, PSCAD or similar). A model of a synchronous condenser, with its stabilizing characteristics (mainly short circuit capacity, rotating energy/inertia and reactive power) needs to be defined and naturally be part of the grid model. The analyses may include system stability, effects of connected renewable energy sources, transmission capacity and fault cases. Other areas of interests might be to identify and describe the characteristics of connection points to provide the most optimal placements and the rating of a synchronous condenser, i.e., where the system performance is mostly improved in terms of hosting capacity of renewables, transmission capacity etc. It is expected that the student collects and defines the details of the task after discussion with ABB specialists. Details: • Proposed period: Spring 2025 • Job type: Master thesis • Number of students: One (potentially two) • Way of working and location: Students work preferably on distance from university, with modelling tools and supervisor available at university. ABB offers the basic task definition, synchronous condenser product knowledge, general supervision regarding execution of the master thesis. It is proposed that contact is done per weekly Teams meetings and F2F visits on-site at ABB Large Motors and Generators in Västerås as well as ABB Corporate Research Center in Västerås. Your responsibilities: Your responsibility is to perform advanced modeling and simulation work as described. We value ability to work independently with the task based on regular discussion and support from our R&D team. The task includes ability to demonstrate good planning and regular reporting. Deliverables include the power grid model in the selected simulation tool, simulation analysis & results, and recommendations as to where a synchronous condenser would have the most impact. All to be summarized in a final report.
Qualifications for the role
- M.Sc. student in Electrical Engineering, or similar
- Knowledge of power grid simulation software (Power factory, PSCAD or similar)
- It is a strong advantage if the applicant has availability of the mentioned tools at the university
- Strong communication and presentation skills, ability to work independently, ambitious, and goal-oriented
