System Administrator for the European Weather Cloud

We are looking for 2 engineers to reinforce our team working closely with our customer EUMETSAT on operating the EUMETSAT side of the EWC (European Weather Cloud). The EWC is a joint initiative of EUMETSAT and ECMWF to set up a distributed Cloud Computing infrastructure to serve the European Meteorological Infrastructure and its users.
Technical tasks & Responsibilities
You will be part of the technical team responsible for the operations and evolutions of the EWC (European Weather Cloud) and experience Cloud from the side of the Cloud provider. You will be contributing to the design, evolution and operations of cloud services such as IAM (Identity and Access Management), Managed Kubernetes Service, Container Registry Service, Cloud application Catalogue, and similar. You will be applying GitOps principles and using infrastructure-as-code to deploy and manage the Cloud services.
Some of your tasks will include:
- Producing and/or contributing to technical design, administration and user documentation for EWC services
- Supporting requirement gathering for new EWC services
- Implementing proof of concept deployments of EWC services
- Designing and implementing deployment strategies and IaC automation for new EWC services in production mode
- Handover of service operations to the helpdesk team and occasionally supporting the team in resolution of complex issues
- Occasionally providing 3rd-line support and consultancy directly to EWC users on more complex use cases
Depending on your seniority and role, your tasks might also include:
- Team leadership and coordination
- Service and project management of the activities assigned to the team
- Acting as the prime interface between EUMETSAT and TERMA for the activities related to the team area
Required Skills and Experience:
- Strong Linux know-how;
- Strong scripting know-how (e.g. Bash, Python…);
- Experience in CI/CD and infrastructure as a code (e.g. Ansible, Terraform);
- Experience in developing cloud-native applications;
- Experience in Kubernetes administration;
- Fluency in English
- Degree in IT related study
- Very good analytical skills
- Experience and willingness working with user communities
- Good written and verbal communication and team working skills
- Self-motivated and able to work independently in an organised and disciplined manner; in particular in relation to applying engineering standards and methods
Desirable Competencies
Experience in some of the below is considered an advantage:
- Experience in working in a user support role
- Experience in working in a DevOps team
- Familiarity with meteorological applications or remote sensing and related services and data formats
- Programming experience (Java, JavaScript, etc.)
- Experience in using Openstack APIs
- Experience as System Administrator
- Experience in function as a service (FaaS)
- Experience with administering IAM systems (Keycloak, etc.)
This is a full time position that can be based in the following countries: Germany, The Netherlands, France, Austria, Czech Republic and Romania.
