The Department of Sustainability and Planning at the Technical Faculty of IT and Design invites applications for one or more positions as associate professor in the field of in problem based learning in engineering education as per 1st March 2025 or as soon as possible thereafter. The position is a permanent full-time position

The Department of Planning and Sustainability conducts research and teaching on development and planning in a broad sense, including both technical and social-technical aspects, with a focus on planning for sustainability.

Your job responsibilitiesAs associate professor of problem-based learning in engineering education you will be a key member of the research group UNESCO PBL Centre and contribute to the department’s research and teaching environment and to the faculty’s overall research strategy. You will contribute to the development of the research group and department both independently and in collaboration with others via your research of high international quality. You ensure that your teaching maintains a high academic and didactic standard. You possess excellent collaborative skills and a broad academic network which you can bring into play in your contribution to the academic development of Aalborg University and its profile both nationally and internationally.

Your main tasks will consist of:

  • Research of high international quality, including publication in top international journals and communicating your research in national and international academic networks.
  • Teaching and supervision of bachelor’s and master’s degree students, contributing to the development of new, creative learning activities that foster innovation and critical thinking.
  • Securing external research funding to support cutting-edge research and foster a culture of academic excellence.
  • Supervision of PhD students, contributing to the development of the faculty's PhD courses and promoting interdisciplinary and culturally diverse research approaches.
  • Involvement in assessment and committee work at Aalborg University, ensuring high academic standards and fostering an inclusive and collaborative culture.
  • Dissemination of your research to the outside world, using creative methods to engage diverse audiences and maximize societal impact.
  • As a key member of the research group‘UNESCO PBL Centre’, you shall contribute to the research and development work surrounding the following areas:
  • PBL for better student learning– strengthening PBL to support the new generation of learners in developing interdisciplinary competencies such as design-thinking, system-thinking, collaborative learning, sustainability, and cultural awareness, while fostering creativity in learning activities.
  • PBL for educational change– utilizing PBL to drive meaningful educational reforms, including curriculum development, faculty development, and embedding EDI(Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion) in education.
  • Future of PBL– exploring how PBL can enhance creative, collaborative, and active learning experiences empowered by technological and digital support at all education levels.
  • Internationalization of PBL– advancing PBL in diverse cultural contexts and co-creating new knowledge through international collaboration, promoting a global learning community
  • Other relevant areas related to PBL.

You will report to the Head of Department of Planning and Sustainability

Your competences

You have established yourself with a prominent, independent research profile within problem-based learning in engineering education and possess documented solid research and teaching qualifications at a high international level, as well as you have experience with academic leadership tasks in a research group. You have broad international cooperative partnerships and experience of collaborations with private and public-sector organizations. At the same time, you have experience of applying for funding from national and international funding bodies. It is an advantage if you have stayed or been employed at one or more internationally recognized research institutions. Due to requirements specifying the language of teaching activities, the candidate should be able to carry out teaching activities in both English and Danish or be highly motivated to develop language skills to comply with this requirement within the first 3 years of employment. As a person, you are dedicated and possess advanced communication skills. You can build relationships based on trust with students, colleagues and partners. As a lecturer you communicate the newest and relevant knowledge in a committed, clear and comprehensible manner. As a supervisor you are competent, inspiring and supportive.

You are ready to take co-responsibility for the development of the department's research and education at the highest international level and for ensuring that we maintain a good work environment. You naturally involve yourself in interdisciplinary collaboration at departmental, faculty and university level as well as nationally and internationally.

Employment is in accordance with the Ministerial Order on the Appointment of Academic Staff at Universities(the Appointment Order) and the Ministry of Finance's current Job Structure for Academic Staff at Universities. Employment and salary are in accordance with the collective agreement for state-employed academics.
