The Institute of Learning at Ilisimatusarfik, University of Greenland, is looking for an associate professor or assistant professor in pedagogy, with a focus on general didactics in public schools.
The chosen applicant for the position will be part of the Institute of Learning’s research team at the Centre for Learning & Education - and will participate in developing existing research of the public schooling in Greenland, with a specific focus in general didactics. It is expected that the chosen applicant will complete empirical research both as independent research projects and in collaboration with the Institute’s other researchers - hereby contributing to the construction of a knowledgebase in and about the public school system in Greenland.
The position is set to start 1 February 2025 - or by agreement.
The Institute of Learning consists of diverse research and study environments - with about 160 students, 25 full-time employees and a collection of PhD students. The Institute offers a bachelor’s in learning (teacher’s program), a master’s in didactics, cultural meeting and processes of change, in addition to competencies development in selected courses in public schools and special pedagogy.
At Ilisimatusarfik, University of Greenland, teaching can take place in Greenlandic, Danish and English.
Qualifications
- A relevant university degree at PhD level, or similar withing the area of pedagogy, with a special focus on general didactics in public schooling.
- Research, teaching and mediation qualifications to the level of an assistant professor or associate professor.
- Knowledge about and experience with qualitative and quantitative research within a broad theoretical field is welcomed.
- Experience teaching about general didactics within the field of teaching.
- Can publish in English, and can teach in either Greenlandic, Danish or another Scandinavian language.
- An international research profile.
Work assignments
Your primary work assignments will, beyond doing research around general pedagogy, be centered around teaching in pedagogy with a focus on general didactics. Regarding teaching at the teacher’s program, it will be an advantage to also teach within a specific area that is found in the public school system.
Concretely, the position consists of the following assignments:
- Teaching at the teacher’s program (bachelor level), at the master’s program, and future master’s courses.
- Developing new research projects, with a relevance to the research field in Greenland.
- Supervision, counseling and examination of students at a bachelor’s, master’s and PhD level.
- Further development of the program in collaboration with the rest of the institute.
- Communication of research-based knowledge to both relevant journals, as well as to the Greenlandic press, and at the political level.
- Knowledge exchange with Greenlandic society and participation in the public debate.
- Professional evaluations work.
- Participation in administrative and collegial collaboration.
- Active participation and involvement in applications of funds and international networks.
Prior experience with supervision, counseling, teaching and coordination of modules will be prioritized - especially with a background in the teacher’s program (but it is not a pre-requisite). Furthermore, knowledge about Greenland and the Arctic is of high relevance, but not a pre-requisite.

The university is situated in Nuuk, which both offers an international feeling, as well as the impression of a small place. The university is relatively small, which is a benefit during the week. - 4: Complete numerical list of publications. Added works (see add. 8) is marked with an * in the publication list.
- 5: Short description of prior research - including an outline of possible future research projects.
- 6: A teaching portfolio with documentation related to teaching qualifications and university pedagogy or similar - including possible reflections on prior and future teaching.
- 7: Documentation of research communication.
- 8: Up to 5 publications at chapter or article length. The applicant can select a maximum of 5 publications relevant for the review when applying for the associate professor position - and a maximum of 3 articles when applying for the assistant professor position.

Assessment and recruitment procedure for assistant professor and associate professor positions.
Applicants will be assessed by an expert assessment committee in accordance with applicable rules. Applicants will be informed of the composition of the assessment committee after the application deadline. The committee processes the applications received and submits a recommendation to the head of department.
The employment period at assistant professor level is normally for a period of 4 years with the possibility of a 2-year extension. After a positive associate professor assessment, the employee can then move to a permanent position as associate professor.
Employment as an associate professor can take place on the condition of a positive associate professor assessment before employment or if the applicant has obtained an associate professor assessment within the subject area elsewhere.

Ilisimatusarfik, the University of Greenland, was established in 1987 and currently offers 11 different degree programmes, including a few part-time programmes at diploma and master's level. Ilisimatusarfik is an Arctic university that creates knowledge and innovation in a rapidly developing region. The Board is the university's top management. About the Central Administration
Central Administration serves the entire university. It is headed by the University Director. The Central Administration has institutes in Ilimmarfik and Ilinniarfissuaq. The institute work closely with the academic units, but also co-operate with each other. The Central Administration's tasks are: study administration, personnel administration, serving the Board and Academic Council as well as other service functions for the university's employees and students. The Central Administration is also responsible for the building operations of Ilimmarfik.
Salary and terms of employment
Salary and terms of employment, including the right to travel to and from work and relocation, in accordance with the agreement/collective agreement between the Government of Greenland and the relevant negotiating organisation applicable at the time of joining.
Housing
Unfurnished staff housing can be provided for the position in accordance with the rules in force at any time. Housing cannot be provided to persons who already have staff housing or other housing owned by the municipality or the Government of Greenland. Rent and deposit are paid in accordance with the rules in force at any time for the assigned accommodation. Staff housing is linked to the employment relationship and must be vacated at the end of the employment relationship.
Rent and housing standards may vary depending on the age of the property, ownership, etc. There may be a waiting period for the allocation of permanent staff housing, which is why there may be temporary accommodation, including in smaller shared flats or hotel apartments, for which you will be charged. It is not possible to keep larger pets such as dogs or cats in the staff or temporary accommodation.
