For our customer, the European Space Agency (ESA), we are seeking an experienced Software Engineer to work at ESA’s ESTEC site in Noordwijk, The Netherlands.
Job description
You will be a key member of Terma’s IT team integrated into the customer responsible for supporting ESTEC’s technical facilities and developing software applications in the Technical and Quality Management Directorate (D/TEC).
Responsibilities
As Software Engineer and reporting to the Service Manager you will be responsible for developing, maintaining, and supporting software solutions for ESTEC’s technical laboratory infrastructure. These will largely be based on standard commercial laboratory software packages. In your daily work you will interface with ESA engineers to define requirements, test and then deploy solutions, and provide user support in the operations phase. In this you may need to liaise with external equipment providers on behalf of ESA.
The tasks to be performed are:
- Development and maintenance of laboratory IT infrastructure using custom solutions or commercial of the shelf tools such as MathWorks MATLAB, NI LabVIEW, or manufacturer specific.
- Development of smaller ad-hoc data centric software in support of the Quality Dept IT infrastructure and processes.
- IT Technical support for the operations and maintenance of laboratory equipment and facilities (e.g. workstations).
- Maintenance of the server infrastructure (OS patches).
- Identification of improvement opportunities.
This is a full-time position located at ESTEC, Noordwijk, The Netherlands.
The foreseen start of work is January 2025 or as soon as possible thereafter.

How to succeed in this position?
The successful candidate shall have:
- A university degree (minimum Bachelor) in IT, Software Engineering, Computer Science, or similar. Professional IT certifications in place of a Master’s degree also acceptable.
- At least 4 years relevant professional working experience, ideally in an international working environment.
- Experience with heterogenous IT environments – Windows and Unix/Linux.
- Experience with 1st and 2nd line user support, ideally in a large technical/engineering/R&D environment.
- Knowledge of IT Security aspect e.g. identity management.
- Experience with Matlab, Simulink, LabVIEW required.
Desirable:
- Prior knowledge and experience with ESA and/or space industry would be an asset.
- Experience with software development, deployment, and operational support (DevOps).
- Experience with CI/CD and associated tools e,g, Git, Azure DevOps.
- Embedded software development experience.
Soft skills:
- Service orientation and ability to liaise with (engineering) end-users.
- Have ability to troubleshoot, research, and work through complex problems.
- Self-driven as well as an organised team player.
- Possess excellent English language skills.
- Are a passionate and curious techie who loves to learn and identify with the wider ESA mission.
