DIAS Professor in Anatomy and Translational Biomedicine

Syddansk Universitet (SDU)

The Danish Institute for Advanced Study (DIAS) seeks to fill fully tenured positions at professor level. The successful candidates must have an international profile and a strong record of research and funding excellence as well as novel ideas with a clear potential to expand our frontiers of knowledge. The positions are joint positions at DIAS and at a department at one of the five faculties at the University of Southern Denmark (SDU). A candidate will thus have two affiliations—at DIAS as a DIAS Chair and at the department—and will be expected to contribute to both. Tenure is offered in the department with continued affiliation with DIAS. We seek a candidate with insight in human anatomy who can take part in teaching macroscopic anatomy to students and do high-level research within translational biomedicine within any of the research areas at the department. The candidate will be part of the Department of Molecular Medicine.

The starting date for the positions is August 1, 2025, or as soon as possible thereafter.

The Danish Institute for Advanced Study (DIAS)
DIAS at SDU is a hub for interdisciplinary excellence at and beyond the frontier of knowledge, bringing together outstanding researchers from various disciplines to foster interdisciplinary research and innovation. It hosts Chairs and Fellows from all faculties of the university, fostering an interdisciplinary environment. DIAS encourages and supports curiosity-driven research and fosters the meeting of minds across disciplines and levels of seniority. The center cultivates an ambitious, open-minded and playful environment that nurtures both academic growth and a strong sense of community. The candidate will be anticipated to contribute actively to DIAS, including but not limited to participation in DIAS activities, mentoring of DIAS fellows, and promotion of DIAS nationally, internationally and within SDU, as well as through strengthening the bonds between the department/faculty on one hand and DIAS on the other, through interdisciplinary collaborations where meaningful.

The Department of Molecular Medicine
IMM has approximately 180 employees: Ca 30 tenured researchers, 40 Phd students and 20 post docs and +30 technical staff. It consists of closely collaborating and cohabitating research units within cancer and inflammation, cardiovascular and renal, neurobiology, and genome biology.

Additionally, IMM collaborates with Odense University Hospital (OUH) and hosts ca 130 staff from OUH that perform lab based research. IMM researchers deliver teaching at several academic educations: Medicine, Pharmacy, Clinical Biomechanics, Health Technology, Audiologopedia, and Biomedicine.

The new professor will refer to the Head of the Department and to the Head of the Winslow Unit for Anatomy.

In 2025 we are looking for a professor in the following research areas: Anatomy and Translational biomedicine.
Candidate profile
We seek a candidate with insight in human anatomy who can take part in teaching macroscopic anatomy to students and do high-level research within translational biomedicine within any of the research areas at the department. The candidate will be part of the Department of Molecular Medicine.

The existing strategic research areas are within neurobiology, genomic medicine, cardiovascular and renal research, inflammation and cancer, see https://www.sdu.dk/en/om_sdu/institutter_centre/imm_molekylaer_medicin

The successful candidate will be responsible for developing a translational research program within any of the above fields where emphasis is placed on the ability to foster interaction between laboratory and clinical investigators and to build cooperative multidisciplinary teams ranging ideally from basic science approaches to designing and conducting early phase clinical trials. The conditions for establishing a group doing translational research will be optimal since laboratories will be linked physically to each other and to the new University Hospital in Odense from 2027.

The successful candidate must have demonstrated scholarly activities with achievements in translational research, a track record of peer reviewed publications in high impact journals, possess a potential for program development, and teaching and mentorship abilities.

Teaching responsibilities will be within macroscopic anatomy in relation to the e.g. respiratory and circulatory system and could encompass also postgraduate courses for MDs using human donor bodies.

Professor candidates will show strong potential for independent funding. The candidate must have demonstrated teaching activities within macroscopic anatomy. The leadership of DIAS and the hosting Department will provide an onboarding program and support to the candidate to accomplish these goals.
