Apply
The European Spallation Source is one of the largest science and technology infrastructure projects being built today. The project includes the most powerful linear proton accelerator ever built, a five-tonne, helium-cooled tungsten target wheel, state-of-the-art neutron instruments, a suite of laboratories, and a data management and software development centre. It is a brand-new Big Science organisation and we are building it from the ground up.
We are now looking for an NSS Project Coordinator for the NSS Planning & Coordinator Group.
About the role:
We are now looking to appoint a NSS Project Coordinator, working primarily as “Neutron Instrument Acceptance Review Lead” for the Neutron Scattering Systems (NSS). The position is a 3-year temporary position within the NSS Planning & Coordination Group (NPC). NSS is responsible for the construction and commissioning of 15 neutron beam instruments, and a substantial part of the scope is delivered by in-kind partners from the member states. The NPC group is responsible for providing coordination and planning support of the full NSS project, in particular within the areas schedule, change control, reviews for TG3/TG4/TG5 as well as support in the areas Conventional Safety and Radiation Safety.
In this role you will Coordinate the work related to managing the documentation for TG5/SAR (Site Acceptance Review) for all the 16 Instruments and managing the reviews themselves. You will work closely with NSS management, all the Instrument teams and with documentation engineers / technical writers.
The primary function of this role is to drive the work related to TG5/SAR documentation, and to ensure that the Instruments are ready for their TG5/SAR. There is a project team set up, and this role is a project lead role where you will assign tasks and priorities to the project team consisting of about 5 persons (but expected to include more resources shortly). The team is to assess readiness of Instrument TG5/SAR documents, and to check completeness and to do validation of the SATs. You will be a key role in the team that will be working dedicated with Instrument TG5/SARs
This position requires good knowledge of the ESS IK set up, and experience from working within ESS is a big advantage. Skills in project coordination and/or leadership is key, as you need to work with priorities and deadlines for the group, and there will be multiple Instruments worked on in parallel. The first and most important goal for this group (and for you as the Project Coordinator) is to have all the Tranche 1 instruments ready for Beam On Target (Oct 2025), which means TG5s/SARs in Q2 2025.
This is a mission critical role for ESS and it represents a great opportunity for an experienced ESS staff member to support the neutron instruments in becoming operational at ESS. We are looking for someone who is highly capable of leading people and that have a good understanding of ESS and Neutron Instruments, working with a systematic approach and who can also collaborate with various divisions at ESS to develop safe working practices for commissioning and operation.
About you:
For this role, we are looking for someone with scientific/engineering education, strong in project coordination and working with people. We attach great importance to personality and attitude, so we're looking for a real team player: Someone who is sociable, has excellent communication skills, who likes to collaborate with different people and who is committed to helping this exciting project to realise its full potential. We need a hands-on self-starter who is able to work in a structured, orderly, responsible and – most importantly – safe way.
To thrive with us in the NSS Planning and Coordination team, you need to be driven, responsive and good at spotting both problems and opportunities. You are a highly motivated person, with an eye for Project coordination who isn’t afraid to get your hands dirty.
