Postdoctoral Fellowship: Synthetic Topological Matter in Josephson Arrays

Københavns Universitet (KU)

The Center for Quantum Devices at the Niels Bohr Institute, University of Copenhagen, invites applicants for two or more postdoctoral fellowships to investigate the emergence of topological superconductivity in Josephson junction arrays based on epitaxial semiconductor-superconductor hybrid materials.

Related theoretical work is:

  • O. Lesser, A. Stern, and Y. Oreg, Josephson junction arrays as a platform for topological phases of matter, Phys. Rev. B 109, 144519 (2024).
  • G. Delfino, D. Green, S. Vaitiekėnas, C. M. Marcus, and C. Chamon, Cooper-pair splitters as circuit elements for realizing topological superconductors, arXiv:2408.06420 (2024).

We aim to realize and test these and related theoretical ideas in the lab.

Candidates should have a PhD in experimental condensed matter physics, mesoscopic electron transport, or experimental solid-state quantum information science. The project combines nanofabrication, low-temperature measurements using a cryofree dilution refrigerator, low-noise and high-frequency electrical measurement techniques, data analysis, and close collaboration with theoretical physicists. The role involves collaboration with our partner research laboratory at the University of Washington in Seattle, Washington, USA. Extended scientific exchanges to the UW-Seattle laboratory are encouraged but not required. For more advanced researchers, Assistant Professor positions can also be considered, depending on experience.

This is a two-year position with extension depending on mutual interest. The position is open from 15 March 2025 or as soon as possible thereafter.

Inquiries should be sent to Charles Marcus, [email protected], and Saulius Vaitiekenas, [email protected].

Description of the scientific environment:
The Center for Quantum Devices is a research center comprising materials research, experimental solid-state physics, quantum nanoelectronics, and condensed matter theory. The Center provides a vibrant scientific environment with cutting-edge research performed across many different groups spread across condensed matter and superconducting qubit experiments with close ties to a strong theory department as well as longstanding collaborations with industry.

Our center is a part of Condensed Matter Physics at the Niels Bohr Institute, Faculty of Science, University of Copenhagen. We are located in Copenhagen and offer creative, stimulating working conditions in a dynamic and international research environment.

The laboratory at the University of Washington is in the NanoES Building, with close coupling to the Washington Nanofabrication Laboratory, the Department of Physics, and Materials Science and Engineering.

University and the Center for Quantum Devices wish our staff to reflect the diversity of society and thus welcome applications from all qualified candidates.
